Myanmar: Report of workshop on lessons learnt from shelter interventions in response to Cyclone Giri

About the Workshop

The workshop on lessons learnt in the shelter sector in the aftermath of Cyclone Giri, was organized by CARE-Swanyee in collaboration with the Shelter Working Group, Myanmar. Initially conceived as a reflective exercise for CARE and Swanyee, it was thrown open to the larger group from the Shelter working group to broaden its scope, so that the lessons can be used by agencies that continue to provide shelter solutions to affected populations in the area.

The workshop also hoped to bring out some of the strategies used in responding to the shelter needs post- Cylone Giri. The communities and the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar are to be commended for Early Warning and planning in the lead up to impact of Cyclone Giri which fortunately led to minimal loss of life, particularly when compared to Cyclone Nargis 1 Given the varied nature of responses for shelter needs post- Giri, CARE- Swanyee in collaboration with the Shelter Technical Working Group, planned this workshop to explore the challenges, gaps and lessons learnt from the response to Cyclone Giri in the shelter sector. . And unlike the Nargis response, one of the key features was that many INGOs formed partnerships with local agencies to overcome the problem of lack of permission to operate in the affected areas. These and other strategies were used by agencies in addressing the shelter needs of affected communities.

Given the varied nature of responses for shelter needs post- Giri, CARE- Swanyee in collaboration with the Shelter Technical Working Group, planned this workshop to explore the challenges, gaps and lessons learnt from the response to Cyclone Giri in the shelter sector.
